MARVIN ABRAHAM SEKLER
May 5, 1936 – August 3, 2020
On this, the sixth anniversary of his passing, we remember with love and affection our dear friend and colleague.
Born in Poland, Marvin’s early years were spent as a displaced person in war-torn Europe. At war’s end, together with his mother and sisters, Marvin immigrated to New York to embark on a new life. His father having died on a train during the family’s return journey from Uzbekistan to Poland, upon arrival in the United States Marvin immediately assumed the daunting task of providing for his family.
The young man’s search for work serendipitously led to an introduction to Rabbi Alfred J. Kolatch, who was then seeking help for his new business. And so, at the tender age of fifteen, Marvin began work at The Jonathan David Company and entered into a relationship that would grow in richness over decades to come.
As the company expanded, so did Marvin’s responsibilities, culminating in his role as senior vice-president. Multi-talented, blessed with infectious warmth and good humor, Marvin earned the respect of all those he encountered in the publishing industry. In countless ways he was the public voice of Jonathan David, and as such was an invaluable contributor to the company’s achievements.
On behalf of all those who have worked at Jonathan David over the years, heartfelt condolences are extended to Marvin Sekler’s dear wife, Rochelle; his remarkable sons, Mitchel (Maria), Eric (Debbie), and Allan (Sharyn); and their lovely children.
Marvin Sekler will forever be remembered as a compassionate and generous man who derived much strength and comfort from his Jewish heritage and its teachings. May his memory be a continued blessing to his family and to us all.
